Sugar Glider Squirrels - Social Behavior
Sugar Glider Squirrels live in social groups. The members of the group live together in their nests although social groups may break up in summer. Though, social groups may break up in summer. Sugar Glider Squirrels warn others of the possible danger by their shrill yapping. They also gurgle when disturbed.
The animals' major enemies are owls, kookaburras, and cats. In the wild, the mortality rate, especially during the first year of life, is rather high. New groups are sometimes formed, however, they need time to establish themselves.
Groups are territorial. One or two dominant males are responsible for the safety of their territory. Sugar Glider Squirrels are known to have a complex chemical communication system, which is based on scents the males produce by frontal, sternal, and urogenital glands, and the females produce by pouch and urogenital glands.
